power of green

So, there's an article that I came across on NYTimes online called The Power of Green, that I think is worth a read. It's long, but if you can make it all the way through, I think the author, Thomas Friedman, has some good things to say. Many of you might imagine from the title of the article what the main idea is, but I think it's important because, as the author says, "...a new green ideology, properly defined, has the power to mobilize liberals and conservatives, evangelicals and atheists, big business and environmentalists around an agenda that can both pull us together and propel us forward." Don't be swayed by the use of "Green" in the title, because as Friedman notes, "Green" is not to be merely defined, as it was by opponents for so long, "as 'liberal,' 'tree-hugging,' 'sissy,' 'girlie-man,' 'unpatriotic,' 'vaguely French.'” I think he makes a good argument that he calls the Law of Petropolitics: the inverse correlation between the price of oil and the pace of freedom across the world. He also discusses why he feels that the market alone can't create enegery independence, and how he thinks the government fits in to that.
Well, I think you should read it for yourself, so I won't give it all away. And think what you want about the article, but don't take my endorsement of it to mean I'm all anti-army, pro-government, etc.
You may not agree with everything, you may totally agree. I'd love to hear your opinions.

In case you missed the links above, you can get to the article by clicking here. (not sure how long the link will work, but hopefully for long enough to give you a chance to read it. by the way, i'm afraid it might make you sign up for a free nytimes account, which i didn't think was required but apparently it is. i'll see if i can figure a way for you to read the article without having to sign up...)
