saturday photo

[I thought I'd start a new thing by posting a photo every friday to maintain some more consistent posting. I'm already a slacker just a week in!]

Yesterday, we saw off Jason and Abby as they departed Tsaile after 4 years here, for new adventures north. They've been such a big part of this small community since we moved up here to Tsaile. We're really sad to see them go. :[

Last weekend we got to explore the Chuskas a little bit more with them before they departed, and before the snow came! We checked out a cool little waterfall that made these arid high desert mountains {almost} seem like we could have been in the damp northwest. Then we drove on, rocking and rolling over rough roads to a neat spot that might become a future favorite summer camping spot, overlooking the Red Valley area and Shiprock in NW New Mexico, and even distant mountains in Colorado. From there Ryan and I biked and Jason and Abby hiked the last mile or so to the top of Roof Butte, highest point in the Chuska mountains. And what a difference that last climb up makes. When you get up to 9800 ft., you can see a long direction into New Mexico towards the SE, you get a good sense of the width and breadth of the Chuska range, and it's pretty much an altogether cool spot. Among lots of radio and phone towers, there's also a neat lookout station.

It was boarded up for the winter, but a pencil drawn ranger still kept an eye out. The jury's still out on what RBLO stands for. any guesses?

hey rob, you're a genius. i was going to see if anyone was attentive enough to get that. and you are.

i also like the addition of the e to Roofe Butte.

i also had to think for a moment if you are my loyal reader Rob or if you are in fact Rob, my brother-in-law. but your smart comment at the end gave it all away! ;)
