Hoophouse time!

It's almost here!

Tomorrow, we're going to be building a greenhouse in our backyard! We had a somewhat successful garden last year, but since it freezes until nearly mid-June, we didn't get things planted until pretty late. And then we lost a good portion of the tomatoes and peppers that were finally taking off when a few early September hard frosts hit them. So after attending a hoophouse workshop put on by the Land Grant Office of Diné College, I decided that it was do-able and it made a lot of sense for extending our growing season.

Once Julie and Dave moved up here, they were extra motivation to actually build the thing, because they'll be sharing in the ownership and use of it. So it will be a joint effort to grow a bounty of crops that will hopefully grace our shelves throughout the year! [Next up: learn how to can food!]

When I contacted the LGO, they were happy to get involved in helping us build our hoophouse as long as we put up the money and provide some lunch! And we're happy to have the help of their staff and interns!

Check out Julie's post about the workshop, and check back for pictures after tomorrow!

Oh wow Patricia, that sounds really interesting! Why is it called a hoophouse? It is a certain kind of a greenhouse?
