Overheard

Just got back from going to the post office.  I was walking there from the car, past where people are setting up for the Diné College pow wow, and I passed a family that must have been talking about it.

There was a little boy, couldn't have been more than 7 or 8, who stopped and turned up to his mom in seriousness, "Mom, I like the Apache Crown dancers more than the Yei Bi Chei's."

From what I've seen, the Apache Crown dancers can put on quite a show.  But I must admit that they actually kind of freak me out a little bit - only because some of them wear pointy white masks over their heads, with tiny little holes just for their eyes.  It's a tradition far older, I'm sure, than other imagery of evil men from the South that come to mind when I see them.  Nonetheless, Julie and I are planning to go to the powwow, so I'll get back to you on my final ruling on Apache Crown dancers vs. the Navajo Yei Bi Chei dancers.

Here's some pics I got of Apache dancers a while back at the Gallup Balloon Festival.
